For the Pens to win game 2 of their series against Ottawa they must:
1) Not let the Senators go to the front of the net. Expect Murray, and his big mouth, to get his team crashing the net and hunting out rebounds after they failed to score a goal in game 1. The Pens need to knock down anyone that tries to get in Fleury’s face.
2) Keep the 4th line active. Playoff hockey is Gary Roberts hockey … and Georges Laraque hockey … and Maxim Talbot hockey. Each of those players are scrappers who can take the puck where it needs to go – right to the net.
3) Shoot, shoot and shoot some more. Gerber saved the Senator’s proverbial bacon from the fire in game 1 by standing on his head during the second period as the Pens fired 15 shots on net. He’s good, but he’s not so good that he can do that on a regular basis.
4) Limit the odd man rushes. The Senators had a couple in game 1 and missed opportunities on them so the defense needs to tighten up and watch out for players on a Senator’s team that is desperate trying to sneak behind them.
5) Keep Spezza and Heatly off the score sheet. Ottawa is a team that isn’t very deep due to injuries and if you can keep the first line from scoring you expose that lack of depth.
6) Make the Senator’s pay for penalties. The Pens powerplay missed too many opportunities in game 1. They have to score otherwise the Senators will start getting more chippy than they already are because should they take a penalty they have nothing to fear.
